These cover Pass or Plate ("Pass or Plate", "we", "us", "our"), a mobile application operated by Adam Price that lets you look up health-inspection records and our assessment grades for restaurants and other facilities. By creating an account or using the app, you agree to both the Privacy Policy and the Terms of Service below.
We currently operate in Alberta, Canada, and intend to expand across Canada. This app is intended for users in Canada.
Privacy Policy
1 Who we are
Pass or Plate is operated by Adam Price, located in Alberta, Canada. For privacy questions, contact us at privacy@passorplate.app.
2 Information we collect
Account information. If you create an account, we collect your email address and, optionally, a display name. If you sign in with Google, we receive basic profile information (such as your email) from Google.
Location. With your permission, we use your device's location to show nearby places and sort results by distance. You can decline or change this in your device settings; the app still works using a manually chosen location.
Your activity in the app. Places you save to your watchlist, searches you make, places you view, and reviews or feedback you submit.
Feedback and reviews. Anything you send through "Request a feature," "Report a concern," or any review feature, along with your email if you're signed in.
Device and usage data. Basic technical information such as device type, operating system, app version, and how you interact with the app, collected through analytics tools (including Google Analytics for Firebase) to help us improve the app and diagnose problems.
Product-experience and session data. To understand how the app is used and make it better, we use product-experience tools (including Microsoft Clarity) that record how you navigate and interact with screens — such as taps, scrolls, and screen views — and may generate anonymized screen recordings and heatmaps. These tools mask the text you type (such as your email) by default, and we use this data to diagnose problems and improve the experience, not to identify you.
Advertising identifiers. Identifiers (such as your device advertising ID) used to deliver and measure ads, as described in Section 4.
Subscription and purchase information. If you buy a subscription, we receive your subscription status and purchase history from the app store or our payment processor. We do not receive or store your full payment card details.
We do not ask for or store payment card numbers, government IDs, or other sensitive identifiers.
3 How we use your information
We use the information above to:
provide the app's core features (search, map, nearby results, watchlists, alerts);
keep you signed in and sync your watchlist across devices;
respond to your feedback and improve the app;
display and measure advertising;
send you communications you've consented to (see Section 4);
maintain security, prevent abuse, and meet legal obligations.
4 Advertising and marketing
In-app advertising. The app is supported by advertising. We and our advertising partners may use advertising identifiers and limited usage data to show ads, including ads that are more relevant to you ("interest-based" or behavioural advertising), and to measure how ads perform.
Advertising partners. Ads may be served through third-party networks (for example, Google AdMob). These partners process data under their own privacy policies and Google's policies. You can limit interest-based ads through your device's settings (e.g., "Limit Ad Tracking" / resetting or deleting your advertising ID).
Marketing communications. With your consent, we may send you marketing or promotional messages about Pass or Plate and related offers, consistent with Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL). Every marketing message includes a way to unsubscribe, and you can opt out at any time. We will continue to send essential, non-marketing messages (e.g., account or security notices) regardless.
We do not sell your personal information for money. Sharing with advertising partners is limited to what's needed to show and measure ads.
5 How we share information
We share information only as follows:
Service providers. Companies that run our infrastructure and features on our behalf, including Google / Firebase (database, authentication, hosting, email delivery), Google Maps Platform (maps, Street View, place data), analytics and product-experience providers (including Google Analytics for Firebase and Microsoft Clarity), advertising partners, and the Apple App Store, Google Play, and our subscription/payment processor (which handle subscription billing). They may only use the information to provide services to us.
Legal reasons. When required by law, regulation, legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, and property of Pass or Plate, our users, or the public.
Business transfers. If we're involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction.
6 Where your data is stored
Our database is hosted in Canada (Google Cloud's northamerica-northeast1 / Montréal region). Some service providers (such as Google) may process limited data in other countries; where that happens, we rely on providers that offer appropriate safeguards. We handle personal information in accordance with PIPEDA (Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act) and applicable provincial privacy laws.
7 Data retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the app, then delete or de-identify it within a reasonable period, unless a longer retention period is required by law.
8 Your rights and choices
You can:
Access, correct, or delete your personal information, or delete your account, from within the app or by contacting us at privacy@passorplate.app;
Withdraw consent to marketing at any time;
Control location through your device settings;
Limit interest-based ads through your device's advertising settings.
We respond to verified requests within the timeframes required by applicable law.
9 Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security.
10 Children
Pass or Plate is intended for a general audience aged 13 and older and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we'll delete it.
11 Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We'll post the new version in the app and update the "Last updated" date; material changes may be highlighted. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated policy.
By downloading, accessing, or using Pass or Plate, you agree to these Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy above. If you don't agree, don't use the app.
2 What Pass or Plate is — and our grades
Pass or Plate gathers publicly available health-inspection records (for example, from Alberta Health Services) and applies our own transparent, published formula to calculate an assessment grade (A+ to F) for each place.
Our grades are an independent assessment we calculate from public records using a consistent, published methodology — they are not official government grades, and no government or health authority assigns, endorses, or reviews them. A grade summarizes the records available to us at a point in time; it is not a guarantee or certification of any establishment's current safety, cleanliness, or compliance. Inspection records can be incomplete or out of date, and conditions change between inspections, so always consult official sources and use your own judgment.
3 Accuracy, mis-attribution, and reporting errors
Inspection records can contain errors, be incomplete, or be out of date, and establishments can change between inspections. In rare cases, data may be matched to the wrong establishment. We present the information "as is" and do not warrant that it is accurate, complete, current, correctly attributed to a particular business, or fit for any particular purpose. We are not responsible for decisions you make based on the app.
Reporting and correcting information. If you are a user or a business owner and believe information is inaccurate, outdated, or attributed to the wrong establishment, please report it through the "Report a concern" feature in the app or at support@passorplate.app. We review such reports and will correct or remove information we determine to be inaccurate or mis-attributed within a reasonable time. This is the fastest way to have an issue fixed.
4 Not professional advice
The app provides information only. It is not medical, health, legal, or professional advice, and it is not a substitute for official inspection results or your own due diligence.
5 Accounts
You're responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for activity under your account. You must provide accurate information and be at least 13 years old. You may delete your account at any time.
6 Your content (reviews and submissions)
If we enable reviews or you submit feedback:
You keep ownership of what you post, but you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to use, display, and distribute it within the app and our promotional materials.
You're responsible for your content. Don't post anything false, defamatory, harassing, unlawful, infringing, or that you don't have the right to share.
We may moderate, edit, or remove content, and suspend accounts, at our discretion — including content reported by establishment owners — but we're not obligated to monitor content.
7 Acceptable use
Don't misuse the app. In particular, don't: scrape or bulk-extract our data; reverse-engineer the app; interfere with its operation or security; use it to harass or harm others; or use it for any unlawful purpose.
8 Advertising
The app is supported by advertising and may display ads and sponsored content. We're not responsible for third-party products or services advertised, and your dealings with advertisers are solely between you and them.
9 Subscriptions and payments
Some features — such as notifications when a place you follow receives a new inspection report — require a paid subscription. Free features remain available without payment.
Billing and auto-renewal. Subscriptions are billed in advance at the price shown when you subscribe (e.g., monthly or annually). Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel before it ends.
How purchases are processed. Subscriptions are sold and billed through the Apple App Store, Google Play, or our payment processor, under their terms. We do not collect or store your payment card details.
Cancellation. You can cancel anytime in your App Store / Google Play account settings (or as described in the app). Cancelling stops future renewals; you keep paid access until the end of the current period. Partial periods aren't refunded except where required by law.
Free trials and introductory offers. If we offer a trial or intro price, it automatically converts to a paid subscription at the regular price when it ends, unless you cancel beforehand.
Price changes. We may change subscription prices; we'll give notice as required by the app stores and applicable law, and changes apply to the next billing period. Continuing your subscription after a change means you accept the new price.
Refunds. Except where required by law, payments are non-refundable. Refund requests for store purchases are handled under the Apple App Store or Google Play refund policies.
No guarantee of notifications. Paid notifications depend on when public inspection data is released and on third-party delivery (e.g., push-notification services). We don't guarantee that every new report will trigger a notification, or that one will arrive within any specific time.
10 Intellectual property
The app, our grades, methodology, branding, and original content are owned by Adam Price and protected by law. Underlying inspection data originates from public sources such as Alberta Health Services; map imagery, place data, and photos are provided by Google and are subject to Google's terms. You may use the app for personal, non-commercial purposes only.
11 Third-party services
The app relies on third-party services (including Google / Firebase and Google Maps Platform). Your use of features powered by those services may also be subject to their terms, and we're not responsible for third-party services or content.
12 Disclaimers and limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Pass or Plate is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Adam Price and its operators will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss arising from your use of (or inability to use) the app or reliance on its content. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the maximum extent permitted by law.
13 Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Adam Price from claims, damages, and expenses arising out of your misuse of the app, your content, or your violation of these Terms or any law.
14 Termination
We may suspend or terminate your access at any time if you violate these Terms or for any lawful reason. You may stop using the app and delete your account at any time.
15 Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada applicable there, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. Disputes will be handled by the courts located in Alberta, Canada.
16 Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. We'll post the updated version in the app and update the "Last updated" date. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated Terms.
